Les nominations aux Emmy Awards 2023 sont là, et de nombreux observateurs des récompenses se demandent une chose : qui sera EGOT cette année ? Acronyme d'Emmy, Grammy, Oscar et Tony, l'EGOT est le grand chelem des récompenses hollywoodiennes, et seule une poignée de célébrités (comme Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg, Mel Brooks et Jennifer Hudson) figurent sur la liste. Au cours de la saison de récompenses 2022-2023, une autre icône a rejoint le groupe légendaire : Viola Davis, qui a remporté les Grammys 2023 pour la narration du livre audio de ses mémoires, « Finding Me ».
Le terme EGOT a été créé par Philip Michael Thomas, un acteur devenu célèbre pour son rôle dans Miami Vice et a inventé le terme en 1984 mais qui n’a jamais remporté aucun prix. La première personne à avoir véritablement atteint le statut EGOT a été Richard Rodgers, qui a remporté le titre en 1962 après avoir remporté un Emmy pour la musique originale composée pour « Winston Churchill : The Valiant Years ». Jusqu'à présent, la seule personne à avoir été EGOT deux fois est l'auteur-compositeur Robert Lopez, qui est entré dans l'histoire en 2018 lorsqu'il a remporté les Oscars pour la chanson Remember Me de Coco, ce qui signifie qu'il a remporté chacun des prix au moins deux fois. Son épouse et partenaire créative, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, a partagé bon nombre de ces honneurs avec lui, mais elle est toujours à un Tony de son propre EGOT.
Pendant ce temps, un certain nombre de stars attendent dans les coulisses leur chance de remporter la gloire d'EGOT. Cynthia Erivo, Lily Tomlin, Ben Platt et Lin-Manuel Miranda n'ont besoin que d'Oscars pour gagner, et des stars comme Taylor Swift, Adele, Jodie Comer, Lizzo et H.E.R. sont à mi-chemin.
